Wichita State men win MVC golf title in record fashion

Wichita State’s men’s golf team won the Missouri Valley Conference championship by a record 32 strokes, claiming its sixth straight MVC title.
Rafael Becker shot a 6-under-par 210 to win medalist honors. WSU qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the 20th, the 11th since 1999.
The Shockers carded a 3-under-par 858 to cruise to the largest margin since the 45-hole format began in 1990. Four Shockers finished in the top five, with Hunter Sparks (214) second, followed by Louis Cohen Boyer and Calvin Pearson (217) tied for third with Drake’s Devin Leland. WSU’s Tyler Gann (228) finished in a six-way tie for 17th.
WSU shot a final-round 289 to finish as the only team under par. Illinois State (26-over 890) placed second, followed by Southern Illinois (896).
WSU coach Grier Jones was named MVC Coach of the Year for the 10th time. Sparks, who compiled the MVC’s top stroke average, earned Golfer of the Year honors.
Becker, Cohen Boyer, Gann and Pearson joined Sparks on the All-MVC team. Becker and Gann earned all-conference honors for a third time.
Tulsa won the 1995 tournament by 26 strokes, the previous record.
