Wichita State ran into a buzzsaw Saturday night.
Matt Cooper tossed 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball as Hawaii blanked Wichita State 7-0 in Honolulu.
Cooper struck out a career-high 10. Every WSU starter struck out except Dayne Parker and Tanner Dearman, the Nos. 8 and 9 hitters.
Cooper was so effective that no Shocker base runner reached second until the seventh. Tyler Baker and Erik Harbutz opened with singles and went to second and third on a groundout by Mikel Mucha. Parker hit an infield grounder to Pi’ikea Kitamura to threw home and Baker was tagged out, preserving the shutout. Dearman grounded out to end the threat.
Never miss a local story.
Baker, Harbutz and Parker each got two hits, but WSU did not have two runners on in an inning until the seventh.
Jon Flinn relieved Cooper inthe eighth. WSU mounted a surge in the ninth, getting two on and one out. But Parker flied out and Dearman grounded into a force play to end the game.
Notes: Casey Gillaspie made a brilliant catch to end the seventh. Conner George lifted a foul ball near the Hawaii dugout with a runner on third. Gillaspie sprinted toward the dugout, caught the ball and jumped into the dugout, retaining possession of the ball. His catch even drew applause from Hawaii fans. . .
