The spirits from Drake teams of the past appeared to be haunting the Wichita State women’s basketball team again.

The two teams had met six times in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament prior to Friday’s quarterfinals matchup with Drake winning all six. And then the ninth-seeded Bulldogs came out and drilled eight three-pointers in the first half on Friday.

But the Shockers were able to vanquish their past with a 17-0 run in the first half and a 24-3 run in the second half en route to a 73-58 victory at Family Arena.

Wichita State (22-9), the top seed, advances to play the winner of Northern Iowa and Indiana State in the semifinals on Saturday at 1:37 p.m.

After gambling around the perimeter left many of Drake’s eight three-pointers wide open, WSU adjusted in the second half and tightened up to keep the Bulldogs to 2-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.

Wichita State turned in one of its better offensive performances, as Michaela Dapprich, Chynna Turner and Alex Harden each scored 15 points, Michelle Price added 10 and Jessica Diamond scored nine.

Harden and Dapprich were particularly impressive in spurring on those two long runs in each half.

Along with their 15 points, Harden added eight rebounds, three assists and three steals and Dapprich chipped in three three-pointers, four rebounds, a block and a steal.

Drake was led in scoring by Carly Grenfell and Liza Heap, who each scored 11 points.

Wichita State is 1-6 all-time in semifinal games, but owns season sweeps over both Northern Iowa and Indiana State this season.
