Wichita State’s women’s basketball team is picked second in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll, its highest rank since the same spot before the 2006-07 season.
The Shockers return three starters from a team that went 20-13, 12-6 in the MVC and played in the WNIT. Senior guard Jessica Diamond was voted to the preseason All-MVC team by coaches, media and sports information directors.
Creighton topped the poll with 382 points and 26 first-place votes. WSU earned 347 points and 12 votes. No. 3 Illinois State, which got two first-place votes, is followed by Northern Iowa, defending champion Missouri State, Bradley, Indiana State, Southern Illinois, Drake and Evansville.
The Bluejays return four starters, including preseason Player of the Year Carli Tritz, a junior guard. Northern Iowa returns guard Jacqui Kalin, the 2011 MVC Player of the Year who missed last season with a knee injury.
Diamond averaged 13.3 points and 2.5 assists last season to earn All-MVC honors. WSU finished third in the MVC.
