Baseball’s never a sure thing, but Wichita State might be able to extend its lineup over the next two days.
The Shockers play host to an Alcorn State team that has lost 16 of 19 games and has a 9.17 ERA — giving up more than one earned run an inning.
WSU (12-10) is scheduled to send Mitch Mormann (2-2, 3.80 ERA) to the mound at 6:30 tonight, followed by Tobin Mateychick (0-0, 20.25) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Mateychick will work to bring down his ERA, which he collected in one appearance against Purdue last week. He gave up a three-run homer before getting his next four batters in his first appearance after a 10-game suspension for a violation of team rules.
Long Beach State (6-12) visits Eck Stadium for a three-game series beginning Friday night. Wichita State is 6-4 halfway through its longest homestand since a 26-gamer (including nine doubleheaders) in 1983.
