The Wichita State-Purdue baseball game Friday followed a similar script to Thursday’s matchup: low scoring until the middle innings, when Purdue again pulled away for a 10-5 triumph at Eck Stadium.
WSU (10-10), which trailed the entire game, scored three runs in the fifth, trimming the deficit to 4-3. But Purdue responded with a four-run sixth and pushed so far ahead that Johnny Coy’s third home run of the season – a solo shot in the eighth – put only a minor dent in Purdue’s lead.
Credit goes to Purdue (14-1) for handling the WSU hitters, Coy said.
“The first two games they’ve thrown guys who don’t throw very hard that are throwing a lot of off-speed pitches,” he said. “We’re not seeing them up. We’re not hitting the balls that are strikes, and we’re swinging at the ones that are down. We’re just really tense right now – I’m not sure why – but we’ve got to get it figured out.”
The Shockers managed to rough up Purdue starter Joe Haase (2-0) in the fifth, with the three runs scoring after two were out.
Meanwhile, the Boilermaker hitters managed 13 hits off three Shocker pitchers, giving them 27 hits in the first two games of the four-game series. WSU starter Albert Minnis (1-3) gave up nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Once again, the winds were again out of the south and favoring balls hit to left field. Purdue took full advantage, hitting its first two homers of the series.
Purdue, hitting around .370 as a team, has five starters hitting .400 or better.
“They’re just relaxed,” Coy said. “You can tell how relaxed they are and how un-relaxed we are. They’re just looking for one pitch, and they’re not missing. Us, on the other hand, we’re just too tight, trying to do too much, and we just need to relax, and we’re not doing that right now.”
