Wichita State's Aliphine Tuliamuk and Tonya Nero finished 1-2 in the women's 3,000-meter run at the Missouri Valley Conference indoor championships on Saturday in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The WSU women are in first place after the first day of the two-day meet, six points ahead of Southern Illinois; the Shocker men are fourth.
Tuliamuk, a senior who transferred to WSU this semester from Iowa State, finished in 9 minutes, 38.26 seconds, edging Nero by about a second. They were more than 10 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.
Tuliamuk and Nero will compete in to 5,000 today.
WSU's La-Taish Brown took first in the long jump. Her 21-foot leap was more than a foot better than the second-place finisher. Audacia Moore placed third.
WSU men hold the top four spots after the first day of the heptathlon, with Austin Bahner leading the way.
In women's qualifying races, Moore had the top time in the 60 (7.49 seconds) and 200 (24.48) and will be one of three WSU runners in each final today. Three WSU women reached the final in the 60 hurdles, as well. For the men, Todd McKown (7.85) and Lawson Montgomery (7.94) had the top two times in the 60 hurdles, with teammates Cory Benken and Cooper Hanning also qualifying for the final. McKown also led 200 qualifying (21.76).
The meet concludes this afternoon.
