Butler rallies to knock off No. 4 Hutchinson

Trailing by 11 points at halftime, the Butler Community College men rallied behind Shomari Triggs’ 23 points — 19 in the second half — for an 80-78 upset victory over No. 4 Hutchinson Community College on Monday night in El Dorado.

The Grizzlies also overcame a career-high 35 points from Hutchinson guard Kadeem Allen, an Arizona commit and the reigning Jayhawk West player of the year.

Butler led 29-25 with 3:45 to play in the first half before the Blue Dragons reeled off a 13-0 run before halftime. Trailing 42-31 in the second half, Butler went on a 9-0 run with three-pointers from Triggs, Jonah Legg and Bakari Triggs to get within two points.

After trading leads back and forth, Hutchinson tied the game at 65-65 with just over five minutes to play but Butler answered with a 7-2 run and never trailed again.

Bakari Triggs added 18 points for Butler. Trent Richardson added 16 points and Hutchinson native Sean Goodwin finished with 12 points for Butler (5-1).

DeShawn Freeman added 16 points for Hutchinson (4-1).

It was the second time the two teams played in their non-conference schedules, with Hutchinson winning the game in Hutchinson. Butler is new to the Jayhawk East this season.
