No. 10 MidAmerica Nazarene (0-0) at No. 17 Tabor (1-0, 0-0 KCAC) — The Pioneers and coach Jonathan Quinn, a former NFL quarterback, get a big test in their opener at Tabor, the KCAC favorite. Tabor entered the season with a lot of hype around its two marquee offensive players — QB Simon McKee and RB James Monroe — but it was the Bluejays’ defense that saved the team in a 10-9 season-opening win at Nebraska Wesleyan last week, giving up only field goals.

Other games

No. 15 Baker (1-0) at Saint Mary (1-0), 1:30 p.m.

Avila (1-0) at Bethany (1-0), 4 p.m.

No. 22 Evangel (0-0) at Kansas Wesleyan (0-1), 6 p.m.

Central Methodist (0-1) at Bethel (1-0), 7 p.m.

Graceland (1-0) at McPherson (0-1), 7 p.m.

Fort Hays State (0-1, 0-1 MIAA) at Washburn (1-0, 1-0), 6 p.m. — Washburn QB Mitch Buhler got his second season as a starter off to a good start in last week’s win over Nebraska-Kearney, going 16 of 29 passing for 273 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, the Ichabods have a pair of stars in LBs Bryce Atagi, who led the team with nine tackles last week, and Willie Williams, a former five-star recruit who had a pair of interceptions. If the Tigers can’t pull an upset here, an 0-4 start seems likely with back-to-back games coming against No. 3 Northwest Missouri and No. 6 Missouri Western.

Thursday’s results

Independence (1-2, 0-1 Jayhawk) at No. 4 Butler (3-0, 2-0), 7 p.m. — Believe it or not, Butler’s regular season is halfway over after this game thanks to two remaining open dates, with an unscheduled open week on Sept. 28 thanks to a scheduling mixup with Air Force Prep, then a scheduled open week on Oct. 12. The Grizzlies have scored more than 40 points in their first three games and have yet to have an opponent get within 30 points.
