A good look at Walters State was all that Coffeyville needed Monday night.
Unable to gain any information on the Senators because of a Tennessee state policy blocking information on national tournament teams, the Red Ravens had to rely solely on statistics.
But after Walters State jumped to a 41-37 halftime lead, Coffeyville took over, using a 14-2 run to start the second half to cruise to a 77-53 victory in the first round of the NJCAA Tournament.
Coffeyville (32-2) advances to face East Georgia (30-2) at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
“We had no report on what they did, we couldn’t get information,” Red Ravens coach Jay Herkelman said. “It was just kind of an unknown going into this game, and that’s amazing going into the national tournament.”
But after a period in which Walters State (17-16) hit 46.4 percent from the field to get the lead at the break, Coffeyville punched back after halftime.
Earl Peterson cut the deficit to 41-39 on a dunk, two of his 13 second-half points. After a field goal about three minutes in, Walters State was held scoreless until a layin by Cameron High with 13 minutes to play.
By that time, Coffeyville had scored 16 points – four by freshman Mike Martin of Kapaun Mount Carmel – and led, 53-45.
Martin said he felt comfortable taking part in the critical run.
“I was under control,” he said. “I kind of like being in that situation. Coach told us we had to guard better that what we had in the first half.”
Herkelman said, “We got a feel (for Walters State’s play) and we could guard better in the second half.”
That might be understating it. Walters State hit just 5 of 25 from the field in the second half (20 percent), with no three-pointers.
Coffeyville hit 16 of 28 in the second half (57.1 percent) with five more three-pointers. Peterson led the way, and his 16 points led four Red Ravens in double figures. Post man Montel James had 14, Travis Britt 12 and Carl Crawford 10. Martin finished with nine.
