Pittsburg State QB sets record

Pittsburg State quarterback Anthony Abenoja threw for a school-record 378 yards and three touchdowns to help the No. 1 Gorillas defeat Northeastern (Okla.) 41-20 at Tahlequah, Okla., on Thursday night.

The Gorillas outgained the Riverhaws 562-386 despite NSU forcing four PSU turnovers.

Pitt State’s John Brown caught nine passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns.

Emporia State 41, Fort Hays State 18 — Emporia State racked up 534 yards of offense and overcame three turnovers. The Hornets had 414 yards through the air and forced three Tiger turnovers as they avenged a 27-17 loss to FHSU in the opener last season.

For FHS, Tarean Austin and Athon Sheppard combined for 183 yards through the air; and A.J. Woodall recorded 11 tackles. For ESU, Tyler Eckenrode was 23 of 37 for 414 yards and two touchdowns, hitting Shjuan Richardson for six passes and 148 yards.
