The early-season tailspin continues for the Friends men's team.
The defending KCAC champion fell to McPherson 59-57 on Saturday in Wichita to drop to 4-9 overall and 1-3 in league play, and into a three-way tie for last place.
Samson Shivers led McPherson (7-7, 1-3) with 16 points and was the only Bulldog in double figures. Chris Jackson led the Falcons with 14 points, but the All-KCAC selection from Wichita Southeast made 2 of 16 shots.
Newman 73, Manhattan Christian 51 — William Burdette led the Jets with 16 points and six rebounds. Tyler Nordman added 16 points for Newman (6-4), including four three-pointers. Kyle Grant had 10 points and five steals for the Jets.
No. 2 Hutchinson 80, Allen County 54 _ Oklahoma signee Robert Goff scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Blue Dragons improved to 14-0. Wichita Southeast product Joe Mitchell added 11 points.
Missouri Western 78, No. 6 Fort Hays State 77 — The Tigers rallied from 21 points down with 10 minutes left to tie the game with 21 seconds left, but the Griffons hit a free throw with just a half-second left to hand Fort Hays State (9-1, 3-1) its first loss of the season in an MIAA matchup at St. Joseph, Mo.
Peru State 69, Newman 66 — The Jets were beaten by Peru State, an NAIA team, despite 24 points from Philicia Kelly at Peru, Neb.
Friends 72, McPherson 54 — Friends improved to 3-1 in KCAC play with a rout of the Bulldogs. Tavi Polley-Davis led the Falcons with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Ashley Millls also had 20 points for Friends.
