McPherson, Ottawa fall short in NAIA football playoffs

KCAC champion McPherson fell to No. 12 McKendree (Ill.) 38-14 in the first round of the NAIA playoffs on Saturday at McPherson.

The No. 10 Bulldogs, who went through the regular season unbeaten, struggled on offense for the first time all season, as McKendree held the nation's leading passer, KCAC player of the year Shane Mascarenas, to just 202 yards on 22-of-44 passsing. Mascarenas also threw three interceptions.

McPherson trailed 21-7 at halftime, with its only score coming on a 66-yard fumble return by KCAC defensive player of the year Scott Jones.

It was the second straight year in a row McPherson (10-1) has lost in the first round.

The Bulldogs gave up 429 yards rushing to McKendree, led by Jimmy Berezik's 171 yards and two touchdowns. Teammates Marlone Chenault and Larry Russell added 93 yards each.

No. 11 Marian (Ind.) 35, No. 8 Ottawa 20 — Marian outscored Ottawa 21-0 in the second half after trailing 20-14 at halftime to top the Braves in an NAIA playoff opener at Ottawa.

Marian quarterback Clay Coomer threw for 323 yards and a touchdown in the victory. Ottawa junior wide receiver and Wichita Southeast product Clarence Anderson led all players with 12 catches for 146 yards.

Ottawa, an at-large bid from the KCAC, advanced to the second round of last year's playoffs.
