The Kansas basketball program landed Arkansas transfer Hunter Mickelson on Thursday, coach Bill Self said.
Mickelson, a 6-foot-10 sophomore forward, will sit out a year before being eligible to play his final two seasons at KU, beginning with the 2014-15 season.
Mickelson averaged 5.2 points and 3.7 rebounds in 17.1 minutes as a freshman in 2011-12. He also blocked 72 shots, setting the school record for blocks as a freshman. He averaged 5.4 points in 16.6 minutes last season.
But Mickelson, a native of Jonesboro, Ark., never appeared to fit into coach Mike Anderson’s up-tempo style. Mickelson had committed to the Razorbacks in 2010, when John Pelphrey was the coach.
Pelphrey was fired after the 2010-11 season and replaced by Anderson, the former Missouri coach. Mickelson was rated as the 100th-best player in the country, according to Rivals, during his senior season at Westside High School in Jonesboro.
