Venus Williams moves on in Stanford

Stanford, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Venus Williams was a first-round winner at the Bank of the West Classic, a U.S. Open Series tennis event, on Tuesday.

Williams defeated Paula Kania, 6-3, 6-2 on the hardcourts at Taube Family Tennis Center. The former world No.1 Williams titled here in 2000 and 2002 and is a five-time Stanford runner-up.

There were a pair of upsets on Tuesday. Garbine Muguruza took out sixth-seeded and reigning Stanford champion Dominika Cibulkova, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 and the promising Monica Puig knocked off seventh-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3, 7-5

The Australian Open runner-up Cibulkova upset Agnieszka Radwanska in last year's final.

Also on Tuesday, fifth-seeded Ana Ivanovic beat Sabine Lisicki, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, Daniela Hantuchova downed Paula Ormaechea, 6-3, 6-4 and 19-year-old qualifier Carol Zhao was leading Yanina Wickmayer 6-2, 1-0 when the Belgian retired.

The 2014 Stanford champion will claim $120,000.
