After 33 strikes in a row, Katie Verbil’s arm may have been just a little bit tired.
“That stubborn 10 pin got me,” Verbil said, laughing. “What are you going to do?”
What Verbil did Wednesday night was shoot an 879 series at West Acres Bowl, missing a 900 by two strikes, picking up a spare on the 10th frame of the final game and following that with a strike to end her amazing night.
West Acres employee Bruce Bradbury confirmed Verbil’s score and West Acre employees were still trying to get confirmation if the score was a national record for women.
Verbil, a Phoenix, Ariz., native, bowled at Wichita State from 1998 to 2002. She started her series at 7 p.m. and finished around 10 p.m.
Verbil bowls every Wednesday night, year-round, and bowls at West Acres in the summer and fall. Verbil works as a food and beverage supervisor for Hyatt Regency Wichita. Her previous high series was 845 in 2007.
“I can’t ever really wrap my head around what I just did,” Verbil said. “The whole thing just seems surreal.”
