After Friday’s loss to Purdue, Wichita State’s Johnny Coy said that the team needed to relax.
In the first game Saturday, he helped them get that way. Coy’s towering two-run homer to left staked WSU to a 2-0 first-inning lead, and Casey Gillaspie followed with a solo shot.
“That relaxed a lot of heads,” Shocker coach Gene Stephenson said.
Pitchers Josh Smith and Foster Vielock took over, holding Purdue to five hits in an 8-2 first-game romp, snapping a three-game skid.
Never miss a local story.
WSU (12-10) again had good pitching in the second game and scored two runs in the sixth and an insurance run in the seventh for a 5-3 victory and a split of the four-game series.
Stephenson said he was glad the message to relax was finally received.
“We’ve been telling them that for some time, and I’m glad to see that it seeped through the rocks on the shoulders,” he said. “It looked like we were more relaxed (Saturday); we had some better swings on some balls in both games.”
No. 24 Purdue (14-3) was confounded all day by the Shockers’ pitching. After 27 hits in the first two games of the series, the Boilermakers managed 11 in Saturday’s games.
Coy’s homer was off Purdue starter Lance Breedlove (2-2), who went to a 3-0 count on the next hitter, Gillaspie. Swinging 3-0, Gillaspie sent the next pitch over the right-field fence, and WSU had the lead for good.
“I was going up there thinking the pitcher would be rattled a little bit, and he started me off 3-0, so I asked Gene to let me hit,” Gillaspie said, who was given the green light.
Smith (3-1) started for WSU, going 6 1/3 innings and surrendering four hits and a run. Vielock, roughed up on Thursday, turned in 2 2/3 innings of sharp relief, allowing a run in the ninth after the Shockers were comfortably ahead.
In the nightcap, the Boilermakers took an early lead, but Wichita State didn’t give up. While Kris Gardner, A.J. Ladwig and Cale Elam limited Purdue to six hits. Ladwig (2-1) relieved Gardner in the sixth and immediately surrendered an RBI double to Kevin Plawecki for a 3-2 lead — the only hit Ladwig allowed in 3 1/3 innings, striking out three. Elam worked the ninth for his fifth save.
In the WSU sixth, Dayne Parker and Ryan Hege singled with one out and Tyler Baker walked. Parker was then forced at the plate, but Kevin Hall singled to right-center, driving in Hege and Baker for WSU’s first lead, 4-3. Don Lambert tripled in the eighth and scored on Coy’s sacrifice fly for an insurance run.
