Q: Paul, Shockers were at 15-2 during the last pollings for the top 25, yet received no votes. With some quality wins uder their belt, what will it take for WSU to break into the top 25 this year?

Answered 01/15/10 10:26:11 by Paul Suellentrop

A: I thought WSU would get some votes. It did not. My guess is voters looked at their schedule and decided WSU did not have enough quality wins. The win over Texas Tech is dropping in value. That leaves Missouri State as a win that is going to get people's attention, and that's not much. I think it's strange. WSU needs to win at least three more to get votes. I don't know if they can go from out of the poll to ranked in one week.

Q: Paul: at this point in his career how does Murry compare to other Shocker greats in terms of points, FT% etc.?

Answered 01/11/10 11:42:01 by Paul Suellentrop

A: After one-plus seasons, he is averaging around 11 points a game. He will easily score 1,000 points over a four-year career, and could probably do it as a junior at this pace. So that puts him a pretty good company. He is such a well-rounded player, I would expect him to finish among the career leaders in categories such as assists and steals. For example, he has 140 assists and 75 steals midway through his sophomore season. He needs 25 steals to break into WSU's top 10. He needs 182 assists to make the top 10. He scored 374 points as a freshman. If he were to do that for four seasons (and he will certainly do better), that gives him 1,496 points. That ranks 11th in WSU's history. Because he played so much as a freshman, Murry has a chance to leave WSU as one of the most productive Shockers.

Q: Paul, I was wondering if you had any information on the (assumed) recruit who was being shown around Koch Arena by coach Jans at the Bradley game on Sunday? He looked to be around 6 foot 7 or 6 foot 8. Built kinda like Kyle Wilson.

Answered 01/11/10 11:33:49 by Paul Suellentrop

A: I did not get his name. I will ask around.

Q: Have you heard how the MVC has delt with the fan shoving Murray incident at Missouri State?

Answered 01/11/10 11:33:14 by Paul Suellentrop

A: Missouri State is dealing with it. I think it would need to be a more serious incident for the MVC to get involved with crowd control at a school. WSU is satisfied with MSU's response, so it is in MSU's hands.

Q: It appears the link to this QnA board has been taken off of the main Sports page. I was wondering how you still access it or if the QnA boards are being shut down. The only way I could find this was to go through my history to find the link here. Just giving you guys heads up.

Answered 12/24/09 11:08:20 by Paul Suellentrop

A: Thanks. I will check.

Q: What's the word on the student chant at the TCU game? Nobody is saying much. I've never heard of referees being too sensitive to what a crowd is saying. If coach wants the students to be more creative than "These refs suck", how about "These refs may be erroneous"? We wouldn't want to hurt their precious feelings. What exactly is the rule? It seems like booing and trying to distract the opponent free throw shooter are poor sportsmanship, too. Where is the line drawn? If the fans sit quietly and only politely applaud good plays by the home team, that might upset the visiting players and be considered poor sportsmanship, too. WSU will probably have to dismiss the crowd and play their home games in an empty arena.

Answered 12/16/09 12:22:44 by Paul Suellentrop

A: I think the refs overreacted in the TCU game. They can draw the line where ever they like. That chant isn't clever, but it's not the worst chant I've heard at a sporting event.

Q: Sully: Your thoughts on a All-MWC 1st & 2nd team from what you have seen of the Valley this far. Is it fair to say the MWC could possibly entertain 3 NCAA bids if Mo State, No Iowa, and WSU continue playing at a high level? Last,...how was volleyball attendance this year versus last,...saw a few young athletes here wearing WSU garb for the first time ever, and after asking, they said they played V Ball in high school in Long Beach and thought the "Shockers" name was cool! Is the mojo from the girls speading in Wichita too with attendance, VB interest etc.? Cool to see the school develop a consistent high level team!

Answered 12/14/09 14:57:05 by Paul Suellentrop

A: 1) Way too early. I will say WSU's Toure Murry is making a good run at first team. UNI's Jordan Eglseder, Adam Koch and Kwadzo Ahelegbe are off to good starts. Bradley's Taylor Brown may be the big surprise to everyone outside of Peoria. Missouri State's Kyle Weems is having another good season. 2) The MVC's RPI ranks it 10th among conferences. Three might be a stretch. Two looks reasonable. The Valley could help itself by finishing the MVC-MWC Challenge strong. 3)WSU averaged 2,892, down from 3,177 in 2008.

Q: Just curious what criteria your paper has on list point spreads? Didn't see the WSU/UMKC spread today, they are both D1, correct? Was thinking they don't do spreads against Non D1 games and understand why those aren't listed, but thought we'd see on today?

Answered 12/09/09 12:27:13 by Paul Suellentrop

A: We run what they send us. I don't know why WSU-UMKC wouldn't be included.

Q: Just curious how many traveling call were made against Alcorn State last night. I'm thinking at least 10. I've never seen that many calls made in one game.

Answered 12/01/09 14:00:17 by Paul Suellentrop

A: Alcorn State turned the ball over 28 times. The stats don't break them down by category. Alcorn State has eight freshmen. WSU's press got them moving too fast and it showed. I would guess at least half of the 28 were traveling.

Q: Has WSU ever thought about trying to host a early season tournament? Something along the lines of the CBE Classic. Basically a 4 team tournament with semis and finals being at the downtown arena. I think it could be a great situation. They could get someone to sponsor it and run it just like other tournaments. Have 4 main teams, play the first two games at home against inferior opponents then have the main tournament. Would be great in the long run when wanting to host a 1st and 2nd round NCAA regional.

Answered 12/01/09 13:58:40 by Paul Suellentrop

A: I don't think that has been discussed. No reason why it couldn't work. However, WSU uses those tournaments to play big-name opponents on neutral courts. You won't get Iowa, Pitt, Georgetown, Michigan State etc. to come to Wichita for that tournament.

Q: Assuming you were at the game Sat, in the 2nd half, after Stutz hit the 3 pointer, when he ran down the court to play D, it looked like he was barking at somebody on the WSU bench, did you notice that? Perhaps somebody congratulated him on the shot and he was just asknowledging it..?

Answered 11/30/09 12:04:21 by Paul Suellentrop

A: I didn't see that.

Q: Did you quit putting the Shocker report, showing individual stats, on dot.com? I didn't find it the last two games.

Answered 11/25/09 11:51:07 by Paul Suellentrop

A: I was looking for that today myself. I will ask. It should be on Kansas.com.

Q: Paul what do you think are the chances of Clevin Hannah wearing a #11 Kentucky basketball jersey (John Wall) as he watches the Wichita State vs Pittsburg game from the bench? I guess Mr. Hannah should be thankful he doesn't have to watch it on ESPN2.

Answered 11/19/09 16:17:16 by Paul Suellentrop

A: I've got a request into the NCAA to talk about Clevin's suspension. Allowing Wall to sit out an exhibition game seems hinky. We will see what the NCAA explanation is. Perhaps it's legitimate.

Q: Thx for update on baseball recruiting class. Was wondering what players we should be most concerned with the draft, what round some might be projected to be taken in?

Answered 11/17/09 15:15:14 by Paul Suellentrop

A: My guess is Albert Minnis tops that list. Kris Gardner and Zach Beringer are also worth following as scout are aware of them. PGCrosschecker projected Dayne Parker as a pick in rounds 6-20 in January. In general, I think this is a class that looks relatively safe, as in there isn't a Garrett Gould who projects as a sure-fire first or second-rounder at this point. A lot can change, as we've seen before.

Q: Why didn't Tyler Richardson play in yesterday's WSU MBB game, pls? GM played 2 walk-on's in the game. Tyler was suited up, so I'm wondering if there was a last minute decision to redshirt him.

Answered 11/16/09 13:55:39 by Paul Suellentrop

A: Richardson is redshirting.

Q: How did Ogirri fare after leaving WSU?

Answered 11/13/09 09:09:02 by Paul Suellentrop

A: Sean averaged 14.4 points for Wyoming and started 31 games. He made 44.2 percent of his threes.

Q: When you give your updates on Orupke, could you mention his block totals as well? According to the box scores I'm looking at, he has 14 blocks in 40 minutes through the first two games...also 9 fouls...

Answered 11/10/09 16:09:24 by Paul Suellentrop

A: Will do. That's a lot of blocked shots.

Q: So I am guessing one of the only dates still open for the downtown IBA game is the UNI game? If not what are other games that are being looked at. Also I have heard of a rumor that we will be starting a series with Tulsa that will play a game at each cities downtown Arena, alternating every year.

Answered 11/03/09 10:15:42 by Paul Suellentrop

A: It appears UNI (Jan. 19), Illinois State (Jan. 27) and Indiana State (Feb. 6) make the most sense. I love the idea of playing the WSU-TU series at the downtown arenas. Those schools should do everything possible to make this rivalry something special. http://blogs.kansas.com/shockwaves/2009/09/14/mvc-schedules-ready-for-inspection/

Q: I'm certain you've been asked, but have you heard anything about the scrimmage vs KSU?

Answered 11/02/09 10:30:30 by Paul Suellentrop

A: I talked to Gregg Marshall this morning. He liked WSU's performance much better than last year. Graham Hatch played well. More on the blog in a little bit.

Q: From what you've seen, who would you say are the one or two most improved players on the WSU mens basketball team? Most impressive freshman? Thanks.

Answered 10/31/09 10:35:33 by Paul Suellentrop

A: Aaron Ellis is taking advantage of his experience and playing very well. He is bigger and stronger and it's paying off. Graham Hatch is playing very well. If he can make shots, he will start and play a lot of minutes. He gives WSU everything else and the coaches love his hustle. The freshmen are up and down. WSU needs either Kenny Manigault or Demetric Williams to back up Clevin Hannah at point guard. I think Kenny will ultimately play the most, because he is the best athlete. It may take him a month or two to adjust to college ball. Tyler Richardson is a good shooter, but his position is loaded with returners.
