Q: Now that Stutz has made the Most Improved Team, is there still any considerations being made to have him red-shirt next year, or is that now a moot point?

Answered 03/05/10 14:57:01 by Paul Suellentrop

A: I think that decision is a long way off. It is certainly a different discussion than it was a month ago.

Q: Has Greg Marshall Consider getting a Woman Assistant Coach to help him with the Shockers? I think that would help the shockers do what they need to do not Make Misstakes.

Answered 02/26/10 09:45:57 by Paul Suellentrop

A: Not that I'm aware of. I think he likes his assistant coaches.

Q: We have one open skollie to give this spring. It appears we will sign more than one more for fall 2010. What is your take?

Answered 02/24/10 23:19:07 by Paul Suellentrop

A: WSU will have four scholarship seniors in 2010-11. I would expect at least three scholarships will be used. One is spoken for by guard Evan Wessel. Probably need at least two big men, because three of the seniors are front-court players.

Q: Read your article in Shockwaves, do you consider Wessel a 'high caliber D1' player, do you know what other schools were seriously interested in him, is he a shooting guard most likely at WSU? Also, how is Utah and Cyphers doing? Thx

Answered 02/24/10 09:38:13 by Paul Suellentrop

A: Based on what Evan and his coach told me, he had some good programs interested in him. That likely would have increased over the summer. Plus, I don't think WSU recruits too many low-level players. Not sure where he plays at WSU. Cyphers is playhing about 8 minutes a game at Utah.

Q: Paul, saw your comment on the Triple A comment from Marshall, seems to me he has soured on WSU fans, I found the comment offensive. He shouldn't have said it, he could have said how much he admired them, but to say it makes us look Triple A wasn't necessary, even he thinks that. Should have left it at how good they were and said nothing else. This will cause even more friction between him and the fans, he seems to have taken boos by maybe 50 fans and using it against many of us loyal fans, he owes us an apology, but I know you won't agree with me, just my feelings as a long time fan who doesn't boo his own team.

Answered 02/23/10 07:25:36 by Paul Suellentrop

A: Gregg Marshall has not soured on WSU fans. He expressed his admiration for Utah State fans, and nothing more. Was it the absolute perfect choice of words? Maybe not. Neither is it reason for him to apologize. He's made it clear over and over again how much he thinks of Shocker fans. Focus on those words.

Q: Will Wednesday rematch against Evansville be televised? I noticed that it was not listed as being broadcast on Cox 22 or any other channel?

Answered 02/15/10 10:56:42 by Paul Suellentrop

A: No TV for the Evansville game.

Q: Believe the MVC tournament has been in St Louis 19 years now. Is WSU the only current member to have NOT reached the champ game (not necessarily win, just make it)? Seems to me even some of the traditional bad teams like Drake, Evans and Ind St have made it at least once, if not won it. Know every season is different, but doesn't give a WSU fan much hope.

Answered 02/15/10 10:51:44 by Paul Suellentrop

A: That is correct. The nine other teams have made the title game. Maybe WSU is due. A lot of those years, WSU wasn't a good team. It will make the title game at some point, as long as it continues to finish in the top part of the MVC. The move to St. Louis coincided with a dark period in Shocker basketball.

Q: Do you see any similarities between David kyles and Stinett? Very talented but can’t seem to get it.

Answered 02/15/10 10:50:13 by Paul Suellentrop

A: To a small degree, there are some. Kyles hasn't been as productive or as troublesome.

Q: In and Out column. What does Hannah's leaving the bench in the second half to go to the bathroom, have to do with any thing about WSU's playing the game! Did you see him go or did he tell you he went? Bad story writing! I think you shoud print a correction and apologize to him.

Answered 02/10/10 17:50:57 by Paul Suellentrop

A: I saw him go back into the tunnel. I asked. He told me. It is important because he was not on the court at an important time and I believed readers would want to know why. I'm glad he didn't go the Bill Walker route.

Q: It is sad to see Stutz struggle, do you think this is a confidence issue? He has had a couple of very good games. Do you know names of recruits coach is talking to? What are Orukpes stats? Thanks and keep up the good work.

Answered 02/05/10 09:33:20 by Paul Suellentrop

A: Garrett's ups and downs are a combination of things. He gets in foul trouble, so he doesn't play much. Without playing time it's hard to get in the flow. Without minutes, it's hard to get confidence. It's all related. Experience and maturity is the cure. Orukpe is averaging around 6 points, 6 rebounds and 5 blocks.

Q: Is the 5 day planner on the compouter and how can I find it. I thought last yr. I could find it easily. Thsnks Virginia Naab

Answered 02/05/10 09:31:13 by Paul Suellentrop

A: We used to do it. A change in format made it too time consuming.

Q: Paul, it's kind of eerie that 40 years ago this fall our football team was on it's way to Logan, UT to play Utah St when tradgedy struck. Now the basketball team gets to travel their for bracketbusters. Perhaps this will give the players a little something "extra" to play for? Also, it's pretty amazing to go to Utah St's message board (scout) and see how their fans remember the tradgedy. Some of them are even wanting to do some sort of "memorial" for those among the WSU team, fans and staff that lost their lives at the game. Perhaps something similar to the Black & Gold wreath they placed at the 50 yard line of their football field after the accident. Definately not necessary, but touching none-the-less. Is this something you think ESPN will pick up on? Are they even aware of this?

Answered 02/03/10 10:05:20 by Paul Suellentrop

A: It's a real stretch to connect that plane crash with motivation for a basketball game 40 years later. I don't see it. If Utah State chooses to do a memorial, I'm sure ESPN will know and treat it properly.

Q: Where did the word "flush" instead of "dunk" come from?

Answered 02/02/10 09:30:06 by Paul Suellentrop

A: No idea. Probably a TV or radio person used it as a description.

Q: Paul - For nearly a year now I've been hearing rumors that the coaching staff is considering giving Garrett a redshirt year next year. I think it's an interesting thought seeing as we will have Durley and Orupke. This could give Stutz a chance to take a step back and mature a bit more. Any insight?

Answered 01/28/10 12:07:00 by Paul Suellentrop

A: It's not a rumor. Gregg Marshall has talked about the possibility, although it's not a decision that is coming soon. Marshall may want to wait until he gets a good look at Ehimen Orukpe. Marshall will have a glut of big men next year. Stutz and Aaron Ellis are the only two who can redshirt. I think it would help Stutz, without a doubt. Can WSU live without him next season?

Q: I am a Wichita native and now living in the Ozarks. I have noticed that to Missouri State WSU is the rivalry game, both in basketball and in baseball. My question is is Missouri State WSU's biggest rival? Growing up I seem to recall that it was Tulsa in basketball, maybe OSU in baseball. Has Missouri State replaced them?

Answered 01/25/10 09:53:22 by Paul Suellentrop

A: In baseball, MSU is a rivalry. So is Creighton. I think it varies from season to season which one is a bigger rival. Neither compares to the 80s and 90s against Oklahoma State. That rivalry has cooled. They play twice this season, so perhaps it will pick up steam again. In basketball, I think it's Creighton first and Missouri State in second, far behind. Something about Creighton irritates people at WSU, and vice versa. WSU is resuming its series with Tulsa, although it won't be the same since they are in different conferences.

Q: Clevin Hannah is one of the best little point guards to come along in some time. But, I think the best of all was Ernie Moore. Whatever happened to him? Dave (The Rave) was Stallworths nickname at the same time.

Answered 01/22/10 09:27:24 by Paul Suellentrop

A: The last time we did a story on Ernie Moore, he was working in Wyandotte County for the courts system.

Q: Did Dave Leach have a nickname when he played at W.U in the 1960's, I know he was know for shooting from the corner baseline, known as Leach's corner, but was curious if he had a nickname aka Dave "the Rave" Stallworth? Thanks, Chet

Answered 01/21/10 10:29:13 by Paul Suellentrop

A: Leach's Corner is all I'm aware of. Bob Lutz would be a better source. He followed those teams closely.

Q: Sully: while I've followed the Shox for many years, I have yet to comment on the officiating even though several games on the road come to mind over the years at SIU, and Bradley. I also have High school, Juco, Div II, and mid-major officiating experience. I have NEVER seen a experienced crew NOT give the team trying to foul at the end of the game the quick whistle it works to get,...whether its the home, or road team. While I know you cannot offer a opinion on their job, was it a bit say,..different,..to see the "no call" when you had about 12 other calls on fouls not as obvious in the preceding 39 minutes? Second, can you grade our back up point guards? Its a bit painful to watch the Shox without Hannah, hopefully someone becomes a gamer quick. Last, whose is your all MVC team as of this point in the year, and who is the Freshman of the year? Thanks for your work, and take a flask to Cedar Falls, Iowa....there is only 2 seasons there,......winter,...and winters coming.

Answered 01/18/10 08:53:06 by Paul Suellentrop

A: I've watched that replay a bunch. I can see from a WSU perspective where you want a foul call. One thing that's interesting is that no ref is anywhere close to Stinnett when he takes the inbound pass in the backcourt. Had one been closer, perhaps WSU gets a foul call. I've seen refs call fouls immediately in those situations. Anybody who was at the Indiana State game in 2004 when the Sycamores tied up Randy Burns by reaching between his legs to grab the ball has seen officials take more time to make that call in the final seconds. I watched most of the game. I think the refs missed some calls. I understand WSU's frustration and, to WSU's credit, they handled it and had a chance to win. You've got to expect a certain amount of unfriendly whistles on the road. Demetric is up and down. I'd give him a C at this point. He's a freshman. I see potential to improve and I think he will be a good player at some point. Freshman of the year is Colt Ryan with Jackie Carmichael close behind. All-MVC - Elgseder, Koch, Ahelegbe, Hannah and Eldridge. It's hard to keep Weems and Tony Freeman off. They are in the mix.

Q: Looks more and more like we need a Juco PG, it's hard to see anyone on this years team being the starting PG next year and doing it effectively. Wondering how the fouls per game are going for WSU this year at home games? I think we foul too much and it needs to be addressed in practice so it doesn't happen in games, you play like you practice..... Most teams have a home court advantage at home in fouls, but I'm not sure we do?

Answered 01/18/10 08:39:28 by Paul Suellentrop

A: WSU is 16-3, so I wouldn't change much. Depth is a luxury and WSU has used it effectively. It can play aggressive defense and has been a very good defensive team most of the season. A juco point guard is no sure cure-all. It's an option.

Q: With the chance that next year's team will be pretty darn good (and a veteran club) is there any news on any JuCo transfer PG who could help out, assuming that Williams and Kenny aren't as ready as Gregg would like next year? -- again, this is purely a 'what if' topic.

Answered 01/15/10 11:08:59 by Paul Suellentrop

A: I think WSU is still looking at many options, both point guard and other positions. I don't expect a resolution until the spring. As we've seen in the past, another scholarship could open up, which would give coaches more options.
