Q: Michael with the advent of pheasant season, followed by quail season almost upon us, what will it take for the season to be moved back to the original starting point of the second weekend in November? I'm a huge pheasant/quail hunter, but even I think the season needs to go back to the way it was. Any thoughts?

Answered 10/30/07 14:11:58 by Michael Pearce

A: Rusty, The Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission is expected to address the issue again next year. KDWP is also supposed to conduct a survey of hunters. I'd suggest contacting all of the commissioners on the issue, possibly every few months. You can find their contact information at www.kdwp.state.ks.us

Q: Where can I pickup a copy of the Fall Outdoor Guide? Gander Mountain employees didn't know what I was talking about.

Answered 10/22/07 14:43:22 by Michael Pearce

A: The south doors of The Eagle at 825 E. Douglas during regular business hours will work. There should also be copies at the Coleman Factory Outlet Store, too. Thanks for the interest. Michael Pearce

Q: Do you think lifetime state Kansas fishing liscense will begin having the persons picture on the liscense?

Answered 10/08/07 14:55:48 by Michael Pearce

A: I don't know, but it sounds like a neat idea. There could, however, be problems when they're purchased for children. I'm not sure my now 23-year-old daughter would appreciate that her lifetime license had a picture of her when she was 15. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: Michael my 11 year old daughter has chosen a project for school and its how to take outdoor pictures. Her plan is to interview someone who can help her get started and I thought of you. She would like to talk to you or e-mail you with some questions, is this possible? Her name is Kelly.

Q: Mike, what are your thoughts on trapping on KDWP Public Hunting areas? Trappers are using bucket sets with 220 Connibear traps that are designed to kill whatever is caught including bird dogs. I know trapping is legal on these lands and benifical to upland birds by reducing nest predators. Would it be feasible to require trappers to have signs at parking and access points to inform hunters with dogs when traps are in a particular area? I am sure you, your readers and KDWP are aware that hunting dogs and pets from adjacent private residences have been caught and killed. Many hunters are not aware that trapping is taking place on Public Hunting. Some would probably not want to risk turning their dogs out in an area where they knew there was the risk of them being caught in a leg hold or killed in a connibear trap.

Answered 07/23/07 15:43:07 by Michael Pearce

A: Milt, Thanks for the e-mail. I occasionally hear complaints from public land hunters but have not really been shown little proof of canine fatalities. At a June Wildlife and Parks Commission meeting a report was given and very few instances of trapping/hunting dogs have been reported. Matt Peek, Wildlife and Parks furbearer biologist, is well-coming reports of such conflicts, especially if he can be shown the traps in question. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: Where are all the frogs this year? Don't even hear them. Figured with all the water they would be everywhere.

Answered 07/16/07 15:57:24 by Michael Pearce

A: Hmmm...good question. Come to think of it, I'm not hearing as many either. Maybe they scattered out with all the water standing about. Sorry, I have no solid answer and really don't know where to find it. Thanks for the e-mail. Michael Pearce Outdoors Writer/Photographer The Wichita Eagle

Q: I have recently found a Black widow spider. I did some searching online to find out a little about it. All the sites ive been to say nothing about black widow spiders in Kansas. Are there plenty more or did I just get lucky?

Answered 07/05/07 14:30:52 by Michael Pearce

A: Hey Kyle, They're not too uncommon in Kansas, though I don't think they're as common as brown recluse. A good friend had one in her garage last fall and winter. She finally gave it to a biologist this spring. Jim Mason, at the Great Plains Nature Center, is an outstanding source of information on insects and spiders. You can call him at 36-686-5499. Q: Hi Mike - When are you going to take me fishing for doughnut-sized bluegill in Leavenworth County again?

Answered 07/05/07 14:29:01 by Michael Pearce

A: No fair, Chuck, not giving enough of a name. If it's Chuck Woodling, maybe I'm about ready again. It's been 21 years. We still own the property, and the fishing's still great. Send me an e-mail sometime. Michael Pearce mpearce@wichitaeagle.com

Q: Can't seem to find any current fishing reports. Have any suggestions for south central Ks.?

Answered 06/22/07 17:15:34 by Michael Pearce

A: We have them published most Fridays in the sports section. Most of the information is gathered the day before. Good Fishing! Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: Where's a good place to catch catfish in the local area? I've tried on El Dorado lake a few times this year without much luck. Any suggestions?

Q: I would like to order a copy of your Spring Outdoor Guide as advertised in Friday's June l5 Wichitalk magazine. I live out of town and would like to obtain a copy. Will it be included in the Wichita Eagle, also? I do take a daily Wichita Eagle. Thanks!

Answered 06/15/07 19:22:52 by Michael Pearce

A: Sorry, Jean, it won't be included in The Eagle. Do you know of anyone who frequently makes the trip? Distributors are listed in ads in The Eagle. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: Dick's Custom Archery & Anglers used to be at 11922 E. Kellogg. I heard they moved away from Wichita. Do you happen to know where?

Answered 06/15/07 19:21:28 by Michael Pearce

A: Sorry, I don't know where they're now at. I heard they'd purchased a sporting clays course near Augusta. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: There used to be one day or weekend in the spring when a fishing license was not required. It was a good time to introduce people to fishing that had not done much of it. I looked around the KDWP website but saw no mention of it. Do you know if they are doing this anymore and if so when?

Answered 05/22/07 12:46:55 by Michael Pearce

A: Bruce, According to KDWP it's June 2-3. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: Michael, Outdoor phenom, hey curious as to what the best opition for a young bass angler to begin tournament fishing. I have a boat, but I am looking for the best opportunity to fish competivitly in Kansas and surrounding areas. Please give me some good links, if you would be a good chap. Thanks for your expertice.

Answered 05/10/07 13:28:13 by Michael Pearce

A: Hey King, You should be able to check with any local tackle store and find out about local bass clubs. Chances are any local marine dealer that does much of a fishing boat business will also know. That close to Milford, you should have several to look at. Good luck! Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: Hi I have read several of your articles on fishing and also one's about the fishing industry. My question is that you never seem to include The Tackle Depot in any of your articles. This is one of the most knowledgable stores I have shopped in years, reminds me of the old Rusty's when Rusty ran it. I think you should give them a holler sometime I think you will be impressed. Thanks

Answered 05/08/07 15:54:04 by Michael Pearce

A: Actually I don't mention local fishing or hunting businesses very often. When I do, it's often because they contacted me. The story on Zeiner's, on our business page, wasn't mine. Still, I've yet to make it to the Tackle Depot, which I should. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: I really enjoyed your article a while back on paddlefishing. I've been spoonbilling in Oklahoma for several years now and it really is the most fun you can have fishing without going off-shore. While you were researching the article did you run across any good ways to prepare the fish? The meat is so thick, I'm not sure the best way to go about it...Thanks and keep up the good work!

Answered 05/08/07 15:51:43 by Michael Pearce

A: Hi Matt, The main thing with paddlefish, as you're probably learned, is to remove all of the red meat. What's left can be fixed a wide variety of ways. We like it grilled, in a small boat of foil, with a little margarine and seasoning. You cal also go on-line and find any number of halibut recipes that will also work. Check out "Poor Man's Lobster." It's extremely easy and will get your paddlefish to taste like Maine's best. Thanks for writing. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: I looked in the paper this Sunday and saw nothing concerning the KCAC Championship game between Bethany and Friends. It was a great championship series with the title coming down to the last game. It was incredible to watch these young athletes compete with such intensity and strenth. I would love for you to maybe write a story on the championship game itself. I think both teams should be congratulated on the good season. My husband and I have attended many of the area baseball competions here and in the surrounding area of Wichita and this was one of the hardest fought battles we have seen. I was very impressed with the professionalism of the Bethany coaching staff including Marc Carvelho the former Friends baseball coach and they should be congratulated.....the atheles of the friends team fought a hard battle and have also had a good season....congrats to them. Please if at all possible write something to well deserving champion players and coaches.

A: Sorry, I'm the outdoors writer and photographer. You need to contact our sports editor, Kirk Seminoff, at kseminoff@wichitaeagle.com. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: Why don't they change bird season back to the second weekend of November and leave it .That is what the hunters and farmers want.

Answered 04/30/07 14:49:40 by Michael Pearce

A: That's a question you need to ask Wildlife and Parks about. I just report those kind of things. As of now, we'll have the same framework this fall. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle
