Q: There was a recipe for Pheasant in your column some time ago. I clipped it out at that time, but it has been misplaced. Can you provide the recipe?

A: Probably...but I need to know which recipe. Please e-mail me directly at mpearce@wichitaeagle.com

Q: Hi Michael, I entered the great outdoors contest twice, and I was wondering if you could get rid of the first submission, and keep the second one called "Frozen lakeside". I think it is a much better photo then the first!! Thank you for your help, Michelle Spaulding :)

Answered 02/03/09 08:57:32 by Michael Pearce

A: Hi Michelle, Unfortunately we get many people who enter more than one photo, despite what the entry rules say. Normally we select one at random and delete the rest. Thanks for your interest. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: I would like to enter a photo in the contest, I tried to e-mail per the site provided however it would not send it, could I send it to your e-mail address. Thank you Brett

Answered 01/27/09 12:05:00 by Michael Pearce

A: Hi Brett, Sorry, not. Be sure you read the directions on attaching the photo and filling out the form. All of the information should be there. If you continue to have problems you can e-mail brader@wichitaeagle.com Thanks for your interest. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: We would like the website or email address concerning your article in Sunday's paper about Smooth sledding. We are interested in taking a ride and would like some information. Thank you for your help. Ruby Butcher

Answered 01/19/09 12:30:53 by Michael Pearce

A: http://www.alpinesnowmobiles.com/ is the place where I was at. You can google "Colorado dog-sledding" and come up with several alternatives, at varying price ranges. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: Just to say thanks for the piece on Marvin Peterson and prairie chicken hunting. He has checked our liceinces for years and never found us in violation. Having missed the opener this year it is like getting reaquainted with an old friend. Chris Ragan

Answered 01/09/09 16:15:53 by Michael Pearce

A: Thanks for the e-mail Chris. I hope you're having a good fall and winter.

Q: Hey Michael. I am Kent Rains father-inlaw. He told me all about his truck fire. Today I bought him a fire extinguser. He said you did a write-up in the paper about his expierence. Could you e-mail me a copy? Unless you sent Kent a copy, I don't think he has one either as I was at his house for Christmas. His address KRAINS@kc.rr.com. Thanks

Answered 01/02/09 13:28:23 by Michael Pearce

A: I'll see if I can run-down a copy. It wasn't really much of a write-up, just a report on firearms deer season. In it I mentioned Kent had had a bad day. You sure have cute grandkids, Steve. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: I really enjoyed your catfish article on Fall River Lake--"Tuning Into The Channels" on 9 November 2008. Would you consider sharing information on what brand and name of the dip bait and bait "worms" were used? I would like to try it next Spring out here in Utah on Utah Lake. Appreciative, Dennis

Answered 01/02/09 13:27:19 by Michael Pearce

A: You'd be best to contact Mike Cook, the guy I was fishing with. Do some google work on catfishing and guides in the Wichita area and you should find him. Good luck! Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: Can you send me the article on the two top bucks taken during the archery season, that may make the state record? We saw the article hanging up at Dicks sporting Goods, and it was published by the eagle... Thanks

Answered 12/17/08 12:16:22 by Michael Pearce

A: You'll do best to call the main switchboard at The Eagle and ask if they can sent you a tearsheet. It's the only way to get a copy with pictures. Thanks, Michael Pearce

Q: Have you heard any of the rumors swirling around about a new world record whitetail taken outside of Atlanta? Supposedly it is being kept hush hush and is being protected while drying. While it would be awesome, I for one and hoping that it is just a rumor. There are already too many out-of-staters driving up the price of land so they can hunt one trophy a year.

Answered 12/10/08 09:35:31 by Michael Pearce

A: Hi Matt, I've heard about it from several people, but have no confirmations. Right now I'm trying to track down a probable world-record antlered doe. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: I am a member of the Central Kansas Photography Club, I know you photograph at Quivira, Would you be interested in giving the club a program, we meet the 2nd Thursday of each month, we have had Mike Blair, Bob Gress and several others

Answered 12/04/08 08:47:29 by Michael Pearce

A: Jim. Please send me a direct e-mail at mpearce@wichitaeagle.com. I like to shoot pics there, but I'm a guy with a box camera compared to guys like Mike, Bob and you. Thanks, Michael Pearce

Q: Hi Michael, enjoy your e-letter very much! Keep up the fine articles I read on the web. Was wondering about the soy bean chum that you talked about in your catfish story, was they using grain or mash. One of the feed stores here only have mash. Keep doing the great job you love to do! I love the work Hank is doing also. (smile)

Answered 12/01/08 08:37:24 by Michael Pearce

A: Hi Ray, They're soaking whole soybeans in water, anywhere from a day to several months. It's mainly good from when the spawn stops well into September. Thanks for the compliments.

Q: I saw the comment to you about the story you wrote on your wife snagging a snapping turtle, and wondered if there was a way to read it myself. I remember way back when I was kid someone telling a story of such a thing, and thought I'd enjoy your story.

Answered 11/24/08 14:26:44 by Michael Pearce

A: Charlie, Sorry. I think that was part of one of my weekly outdoors e-letters. I don't think those are saved. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: I am a teacher and I would love to have someone that knows how to flint nap come into my classroom and show my students how it is done! Can you possibly put me in touch with your amazing hunter that makes his own hunting tools? Or could you possibly pass my name and address on to him? Also, are there any others more local that you are aware of???

A: Amy, Please e-mail me at mpearce@wichitaeagle.com Thanks, Michael Pearce

Q: Mike, I really enjoy the photo galleries. It would be nice if they were all available through links on the outdoors page. I'd like to be able to go back and view them again!

A: Thanks, Mike. We're trying to get to that kind of technology.

Q: Hey Mike, hope you've been well! Can I have permission to reprint the photo of hte White big buck on my website, mikehanback.com. Of course I link the article to yours, thanks! BTW, remember that elk hunt right after 9/11 2001, man that seems like a long time ago!

Answered 10/30/08 15:15:23 by Michael Pearce

A: Mike, please e-mail me directly at md_pearce@hotmail.com. Probably no problems. Did you see the Flint Hills buck we have on-line, shot last week? It's bigger.

Q: I was wanting to hunt antople in kansas and wanted to know whats the best way to find a farmer/ranch in western kansas to hunt on or lease from. Do you have any idea on this. Thank you for your time

Answered 10/20/08 13:49:36 by Michael Pearce

A: I assume you mean bowhunt, right? That's all we have open for non-residents. If you have a lifetime license for Kansas you still need to get the necessary amount of preference points to draw. Assuming you're wanting archery information...many landowners willingly give permission for people to hunt antelope. Seldom is leasing required. Your best bet would be to make a pre-season scouting trip to western Kansas, knock on a few doors, talk to a few people at the feed store and check into lands enrolled in our Walk-In Hunting Area program. You can call the Wildlife and Parks office in Hays to learn best counties and maybe talk with some district biologists or game wardens. Good luck, Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: Michael, first off I really enjoy your articles. Keep up the good work! I just had a quick question. Have you heard how the wild pig population is now up around the Lawrence area? Also, if it continues to grow through the years, do you foresee hunting them becoming legal? Thanks Michael!

Answered 10/16/08 10:56:22 by Michael Pearce

A: There's been a population based on the Clinton Lake Wildlife Area for three or four years. They were probably released by someone. The feds are working hard to get them killed-off with trapping and aerial gunning. They're bad news for native wildlife, crops and domestic hog operations. I don't think that population will be around much longer. They're making some serious head-way. Probably no hunting since that scatters the pigs and makes them harder to trap and locate for aerial gunning. Thanks for the e-mail. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle.

Q: What is the deal with the new deer tags? At 1 point i was told i can hunt with any equipment during the proper season then the other day i was told i have to hunt with my primary equipment. Which is correct?

Answered 10/16/08 08:20:59 by Michael Pearce

A: Josh, If you're a resident, wanting to hunt whitetails, you can buy a state-wide any-whitetail permit. No units, buck or doe, with any weapon during the appropriate season. If you're wanting to hunt mule deer you'd have to have applied for a firearms permit back in the summer. It'd be good in western Kansas, only during the firearms season. If you buy and Any-deer muzzleloader permit, it's muzzleloader-only but good for whitetails or mule deer. If you have more questions, call Pratt at 620-672-5911 and ask for licensing. Hope this helps. Michael Pearce The Wichita Eagle

Q: No question - just a comment. I always enjoy your writing and your appreciation for nature. Today's piece on the colors of the prairie was lyrical. I intend to copy and send to several friends who need to appreciate Kansas more. thanks and keep up the good work.

A: Glad you liked it, Virginia. Thanks for the compliment. It's a gorgeous fall this year. Michael Pearce

Q: p14D, Sunday, September 21, 2008, feature article: "New season, new regulations" ends with the statement "All hunters have to be wearing orange." The next article "Young hunter and the one that didn't get away" depicts a color photo of a young hunter.....no orange visible(possibly photo-op adjustment). My question: Is the wearing of orange required throughout the rifle season(youth, muzzleloading, etc.) or only when bow hunters are afield? Thank you.

Answered 09/29/08 09:51:31 by Michael Pearce

A: Fair question. Orange is required for any deer hunter when there's a firearms deer season open. The orange requirement, however, ends when the deer is tagged because the hunt's then over. A lot of people don't like to have orange on when hunting photos are taken. Sometimes it reflects poorly with the camera. Also many, like me, just take it off as soon as it's time to get down to the work of processing the deer. Michael Pearce
