Q: Why is it when the Friend's and Newman soccer teams (both men and women) play out of town games, their scores are not put in the paper?

Answered 10/05/09 09:32:03 by Kirk Seminoff

A: That's because we're not getting the information from either team. The home team generally is responsible for getting that information to media.

Q: WSU Volleyball has really come to the fore and the Eagle has given some good copy to it. However, the KCAC, which really hasn't had such press has an undefeated league record of 8-0, in Tabor College. It's sister college, also Mennonite Brethren affiliated, Fresno Pacific Univ. has been NATIONAL champs for the last 2 years and the polls show them #1 and have a 16-0 current record. Could we have SOME or better coverage for Women's Volleyball in the KCAC? There are other teams besides Friends Univ. Thanks! Harold

Answered 10/05/09 09:31:12 by Kirk Seminoff

A: Good suggestion, Harold, I will forward it to Tony Adame, who covers the small colleges for us. He has a Tuesday morning notebook that covers the KCAC and other small-college leagues.

Q: Kirk, I am a true-blue Royals fan all the way and one of my more favorite players in their organization is Ryan Shealy. However, I can't figure out what has happened to him. His stats have not changed since the early part of summer and I can't find any injury or news report on him. MLB still lists him with the Royal's organization, but it is like he has fallen of the face of planet earth. Please help.

Answered 09/23/09 13:20:25 by Kirk Seminoff

A: Wow, I hadn't thought of Ryan Shealy in a long time. Looks like it's been a season-ending injury, though I can't find exactly what the injury is/was.

Q: It would help many DISH satellite users if The wichita eagle would list dish channel for ks sports, like it does for DirecTV Might even sell more papers. thanks jim

Answered 09/21/09 09:31:20 by Kirk Seminoff

A: Jim, we periodically run sports channel lists on page 2 of the sports section for Cox, DirecTV, Dish Network and U-Verse.

Q: I took a subscription to the weekend Eagle to get pre and post game stories on the Hutch Blue Dragons where my son plays. They are ranked #6 in the Nation. Only to my disappoint, there are only stories about Butler. Why no reports on the Hutch CC team???

Answered 09/21/09 09:30:52 by Kirk Seminoff

A: On games where we do not have a reporter, the home team is expected to get us information in a timely manner. We did not receive the Hutchinson-Dodge City statistics (Dodge City was the home team) until Hutchinson's SID, Steve Carpenter, sent them out at 1:06 a.m., probably after the team arrived home from Dodge. The box score was in Monday's paper.

Q: Was wondering if the Eagle was up on 3 Goddard kids doing very well in MILB? Travis Banwart,Derek Norris and Logan Watkins. It would be nice to see a story on some LOCAL kids getting it done!!

Answered 09/01/09 09:30:58 by Kirk Seminoff

A: Mr. Watkins, I check our Kansans in the Minors feature every Sunday, so yes, I'm aware of how they're doing. They're each having fine seasons, and it's a good idea to catch up with them after their seasons.

Q: Has Jeffrey Martin left the Eagle? If so where is he now?

Answered 08/27/09 11:40:39 by Kirk Seminoff

A: Yes, Jeffrey left The Eagle last month. He is now a sportswriter at the Houston Chronicle.

Q: Kirk, I see that Kansas State has a blog called K-Stated. I do not see a blog dedicated to KU....why? There are certainly as many and if not more KU fans in this area. Thanks for your response in advance.....

Answered 08/27/09 11:34:41 by Kirk Seminoff

A: We are hoping to begin a KU blog soon. Keep on the lookout.

Q: I have not seen any news items about the "best tennis town" contest in kansas.com. How could you miss it?

Answered 07/29/09 16:04:54 by Kirk Seminoff

A: It appeared in the newspaper last week. It would've appeared on Kansas.com in a Sports in Briefs package.

Q: Cant seem to find Kansans in the minors on Sundays? (Online anyway) Found Kansans in Majors but not Minors..

Answered 07/21/09 10:04:18 by Kirk Seminoff

A: Our contract with the company that provides the minors list does not permit it to be published online. That may change soon, however.

Q: This is Moore's third year as GM, and the Royals still stink. Every player on this team he got or kept. Time to doubt this supposed savior?

Answered 06/10/09 10:10:41 by Kirk Seminoff

A: Certainly a time to question whether he's going to be the savior. Jose Guillen hasn't been worth the money. After Billy Butler, there's really nobody you'd like to see at the plate in a clutch situation. But there's still time to get it done. Maybe not as a division champ, but at least to show signs that things are being corrected.

Q: Area teams have begun playing in the Walter Johnson Baseball League. They compete for a place in the annual NBC World Series each August. Do you have anyone who covers the games or the league?

Answered 06/02/09 15:51:05 by Kirk Seminoff

A: We don't have a reporter assigned to the WJL on a continuing basis, but we're always looking for good stories about players or teams. Give me a call or e-mail if you've got one.

Q: Once again, the sports writers at Wichita Eagle have blown off the NHRA drag racing event in Topeka, Ks! Qualifying has been going on there since Friday. This morning, there is a miniscule piece on 5D and another on 10D. Not all of us care about WSU sports yet there are a lot of huge pictures and articles about our losing team. Motor sports are an integral part of our community bringing income into our state and enjoyment to its fans. Please explain to me why we have to have some sports crammed down our throats and others such as drag racing are barely mentioned!!! I would wager that if you haven't atttended a drag racing event that you would become an avid fan or even a prospective participant. Give it a try then give it its' fair share of space in the newspaper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answered 06/01/09 10:58:11 by Kirk Seminoff

A: Thanks for your question, Linda. Yes, WSU's season has been mediocre compared to most, but attendance numbers and interest in the team didn't wane, leading us to believe that Shocker baseball is still one of the most popular stories for us to cover. We didn't cover NHRA because we no longer have a motorsports writer and there were many, many other events going on last weekend that we thought were of more interest to a broader readership.

Q: The Eagle lists columnist who report on KSU,WSU, but none for KU.Why is that? The recent story concerning the three D1 schools making the NCAA Baseball tourney showed KU with the least columns inches by far.why? It appears the Eagle limits the coverage of the University of Kansas on every opportunity it gets. I understand the WSU column inches, we are in Wichita but not Manhattan. What is the deal??

Answered 05/27/09 14:35:37 by Kirk Seminoff

A: Patrick, the Eagle and Kansas City Star share KU and K-State reporters. The Eagle's Jeffrey Martin covers K-State for both papers, while the Star's Brady McCollough covers KU for both. The KU story was shorter because the Star combined a story about the regional bids for KU, KSU and Missouri into one story, while The Eagle did separate WSU and KSU stories.

Q: Who is the only head football coach to lead teams against legendery coaches Paul Bear Bryant and Eddie Robinson. PS. If you get this wrong, I'll come and spank you in some 21.

Answered 05/15/09 13:56:13 by Kirk Seminoff

A: He's the father of a kid I knew who couldn't beat me in 21 if I spotted him 19, the ball and a path to the basket.
