Dave Unruh: Values guide county workers

Comments (0)

As you probably have heard, the Sedgwick County Commission is having a discussion about ethics and exploring what an ethics policy might look like for commissioners and the organization (Nov. 4 Eagle). Some may construe that because we are having the discussion, there may be some problem that we are trying to fix.

This couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, I believe we are building on the strong foundation of professionalism for our Sedgwick County government that employees and former commissioners have established.

During the Sedgwick County Commission meeting on Oct. 14, 1992, Commissioners Betsy Gwin, Bill Hancock, Billy McCray and Mark Schroeder adopted "Sedgwick County Values" that "reflect the character of Sedgwick County citizens and, thus, of all county employees." These values are accountability, commitment, equal opportunity, honesty, open communication, professionalism and respect. County employees from across the organization worked to establish and define these values and accept the responsibility to make them a part of our everyday work ethic.

These values serve as a guide for how we behave as county employees. They are posted throughout our organization, are part of our new employee orientation and training courses, and have a significant impact on our annual employee performance evaluations. They are the basis for how we interact with one another and with those we serve.

I work under the premise of "presumption of good will." I believe our county employees come to work every day to deliver quality public services and to serve the citizens of Sedgwick County. I appreciate the leadership and dedication of the employees and commissioners who have worked over the years to create a culture based on high expectations for professionalism, accountability and service to our citizens. I believe the continued commitment to that culture and the county values are the foundation to providing quality public services that citizens can trust.
