Remember when the Democrats and Republicans were working for the people who elected them and were about making our country stronger? Now they are about special interests, taxes, regulations. They want us to re-elect them so they can correct the mess they created. For the hardworking people, the enemy is the politicians.

Whenever Republicans whine, yell, scream, rant or call President Obama names, they simply are showing the rest of America what the Grand Old Party has been reduced to: a bunch of whiny, spoiled brats and sore losers.

A friend explained a government program to me: "It is like giving yourself a blood transfusion from your right arm to your left arm and losing 50 percent in between."

An unemployment rate of 9.8 percent. A $1.4 trillion budget deficit. Plummeting tax revenues. Sounds like a great time to spend another trillion dollars on health care reform.

When we finally get health care reform, I will be able to stop paying $15,600 yearly premiums for myself and my spouse. We can pay the $1,000 fine and purchase insurance if we get sick. I will save thousands of dollars.

It looks to me like most of Sen. Pat Roberts' suggestions for health care reform would result in higher premiums ("Health reform bill too costly, intrusive," Oct. 18 Opinion). Perhaps his lobbyist got 72 hours to read the bill and wrote a position article for him.

A new study says that ending the death penalty could save the United States millions of dollars. I don't understand how that would save money, and I wonder how much the "study" cost.

Because of sin, God put a death penalty on all of mankind. End of discussion.

I would like to thank the genius who plans the road construction in the county. Now that 63rd Street South and the bridge on South Hydraulic are closed, I have to drive an extra 12 miles a day. With gas at $2.43 a gallon, I guess I will keep track of the mileage and send the county the bill.

It sounds like a lot of small towns are having a hard time getting anyone interested in running for mayor. Does someone actually have to be there to be mayor? How about virtual mayors?
