Opinion Line (Oct. 13)

Advancing diplomacy rather than confrontation. Pressuring Israel to stop expanding settlements. Repairing our European relations. Engaging on global warming and nuclear arms reduction. And his speech in Cairo to the Muslim world. It was wise to bestow the Nobel Peace Prize on President Obama.

The Nobel prizes for science and literature are reasonably intact as far as their integrity. The peace prize, however, has become an instrument of politics and an award for which I no longer have any regard. Not since it was awarded to the terrorist Yasser Arafat.

Nominating Obama for a Nobel Peace Prize two weeks after entering office would be comparable to giving the Chiefs the Super Bowl trophy after the second week of the season.

I wish Obama was as big on fighting against the discrimination of white people as he was against the discrimination of gay people. End affirmative action now.

The Taliban in Afghanistan cannot be defeated any more than Christianity in the United States could be defeated. This will just be another sinkhole of debt and young American lives.

At least with Bush no longer our president, we know that we didn't bomb the moon because it was a hotbed for the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction.

NASA crashed rockets on the moon in search of water? Suppose there is water on the moon? So what? What do you think NASA is really doing?

Jesus Christ was the ultimate liberal. Forgiveness? Redemption? Radical ideas? Think about it.

KU is asking for input from its students about its alcohol policy. Here's a suggestion: If you're under the age of 21, don't drink.

Marijuana is not a "gateway drug" at all. The real gateway drugs are alcohol and tobacco.

Women like columnist Star Parker do not deny women. We try to protect them from the life-altering decision of abortion and try to help them to see that it will not "be over in a minute."

I find The Eagle's new weather icons to be too tiny, too fussy and too creepy. They bring to mind some sort of insect. The others were great.

Count me as a "country music hater," but Brad Paisley is truly a great guitar player. I'm headed downtown now to rent a parking stall. Then I will check into tickets.
