The following are excerpts of editorials written by students in Bev Poos' seventh-grade English class at Maize South Middle School:
OMG, no way. Why are people texting while driving? There should be a law against texting while driving. Yeah, sure, you can say it's super important, but is it more important than the danger you're putting yourself in? You can say that you're paying attention to the road, but what are you more focused on? The phone. Messing with the phone while on the road puts you at risk of crashing into some object or into some innocent person.— Lexy Cochran
President Obama thinks that school should be year-round. I think he should work on more important matters, such as the war and nuclear missiles, and not school vacation.— Calvin Nguyen
Some people say that video games are bad for kids and our brains, but with new technology, we can get active and play. Some video games make you think and look hard, and you may have to use school skills such as addition and subtraction. Also, there are new healthy, active gaming systems, such as the Wii.— Spencer Bruner
Halloween should be moved so it is always the last Saturday of October. Doing so would help kids enjoy Halloween more, because on the weekdays they have to rush around. It would help parents as well, because it would make their lives less stressful. There would be more time for trick-or-treating, pictures and visiting extended family. Teachers could win, too. Kids always seem hyper the day after Halloween. If Halloween is moved, children will have a day to settle down before going back to school.— Cole Hardin
The government made the right decision in getting rid of smoking ads, but why did it keep ads for something just as deadly? Alcohol commercials fail to communicate the true dangers of drinking. They make it seem harmless and cool. The ads encourage underage drinking and drunken driving. It's time for the government to step up and put a stop to it.— Sarah Slack
The death penalty is too costly. Court case appeals cost a lot of money and take a lot of time. If we pay for rehabilitation, it could help prisoners become productive members of society, which would help the economy. Also, it is not right to kill someone just because he or she killed another. This teaches the wrong lesson. More death causes more families to suffer, more money to be spent, and more division.— Evan Pierce
If we want our planet to be clean and not polluted, we all need to go green. Recycling is a great way to help our environment. It takes less than five minutes a day to take your recyclables out to your bins. Recycling can also help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases. We can also save energy by shutting off lights when not using them, or raising the thermostat 2 degrees in the summer or lowering it 2 degrees in the winter. The effects of going green may not happen instantly, but if all of us start going green, it will add up. —Tucker Downs
