Congratulations to the Wichita State University men’s basketball team on winning the Missouri Valley Conference title. And on being the nation’s lone unbeaten Division I team. And on making the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated. And on its overall awesomeness.

The Shockers clinched at least a tie for the conference title with the win Wednesday against Loyola, raising their record to 28-0. They will go for the outright title Saturday against Drake.

When the Shockers made the regional cover of Sports Illustrated last April, the title was “Shock the World” – reflecting the team’s unexpected (by many) march to the Final Four. But this year’s success is no shocker, and the magazine aptly labeled the team the “Monsters of the Midwest.”

The “try to jinx us” headline – referring to the tendency of teams that make the Sports Illustrated cover to lose their next game – reflects the confidence of the Shockers. Though they don’t take it for granted, they expect to win.

Not only are the men dominating the hardcourt, so are the Shocker women. They are 21-3 overall and 12-1 in the conference, and are closing in on their own title.

The dual success of the Shocker men and women has made this a special year for WSU and Wichita. And we’re hungry for more.
