Eagle editorial: WSU volleyball on the rise

We interrupt the usual politics and policy debates of the Opinion page to hail the amazing Wichita State University volleyball team, which has powered its way to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Its rise has made school history, and made Wichita proud.

Though WSU has regularly played in the NCAA Tournament since 2004, coach Chris Lamb’s 2012 team is the unseeded underdog in the match against No. 6 Southern California at 5 p.m. Friday in Austin. So big challenges stand between the Shockers and a Dec. 15 national championship in Louisville.

But the 24-9 Shockers, the first Missouri Valley Conference team to make the Sweet 16 in a decade, exemplify the speed, athleticism and teamwork of their sport at its best.

“Wichita, to me, seems like a place that is just waiting for volleyball to take off and explode,” Lamb said back when he was hired in 2000.

He proved himself right, while showing that sports traditions are built point by point, win by win, season by season.

Congratulations to Lamb and his team, and good luck in Austin and beyond.
