Good things happen in our community and state that just make you want to shout:
* Welcome back to the Big Read Wichita , which will have us wrapped up in Zora Neale Hurston's 1937 "Their Eyes Were Watching God" all month and gather readers together for events (www.bigreadwichita.org).
* Congratulations to Jeanie Padron , the Maize Central Elementary School fourth-grade teacher who earned a 2010 Milken National Educator award and its $25,000 prize. She's the only Kansan among this year's 55 winners of the awards informally known as the "Oscars of teaching."
* Happy 100th anniversary to Heads Village Shoe Store at Douglas and Oliver, which has defied the times and trends by staying independent, family-owned and open.
Never miss a local story.
* Congratulations to retired postman Larry Gunkel , food program manager at Kansas Food Bank, who was honored Thursday in Washington, D.C., as the National Association of Letter Carriers' 2010 National Humanitarian of the Year.
