Wichita owes part of its global profile to Chance Manufacturing Co., whose amusement rides and miniature trains have delighted families at theme parks and zoos for five decades. That means Wichita owes a debt of gratitude to founder Richard "Harold" Chance, who died Saturday at age 88.
As an Eagle letter writer observed years ago: "Not many Wichitans have an occasion to go out and buy a carousel or a giant gondola wheel for their backyards, so we aren't always aware of how fortunate we are to have locally grown companies such as Chance become nationally and internationally known manufacturers."
Mr. Chance will continue to inspire other entrepreneurs with his skill for building not only fun, high-quality rides but also an enduring family business deeply rooted in its community.
