First day of fall
Today is the first day of fall, and the autumnal equinox, beginning at 4:18 p.m. CDT. To an observer on the equator, the sun's rays will be directly overhead. Equinox is derived from two Latin words, meaning "equal night." In other words, near the time of the equinox, the amount of day and night will be equal. Because we observe the sun as a disk and not a point and thanks to sunlight being bent as it travels through the atmosphere, equal hours of day and night won't happen here in Wichita until this Friday and Saturday.
