Hurricane season
It's been a rather quiet hurricane season so far over the Atlantic with only six named tropical systems. Two of these became hurricanes. Bill developed in late August, reaching Category 4 strength with winds up to 135 mph. Hurricane Fred formed in early September and reached Category 3 strength as the top winds reached 120 mph. Neither hurricane struck the U.S. mainland directly, but Bill brought large waves and swells to the East Coast, which were responsible for a few deaths. The peak part of the hurricane season runs from late August until early October.
