Sunshine will rule the day Wednesday in the Wichita area, forecasters say, before strong thunderstorms roll into the region overnight.

Highs are expected to reach the mid-80s, with light southerly winds intensifying to the teens by late morning. Gusts could surpass 25 miles an hour.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to arrive early Thursday morning, and forecasters say heavy rain is possible. Lows will bottom out in the mid-60s, with southeasterly winds remaining in the teens and gusting to nearly 30 miles an hour.

Rain chances will persist through Thursday morning, forecasters say, before skies begin to slowly clear. Highs will only reach the mid-70s, with light winds shifting to the north by afternoon. Gusts could still top 20 miles an hour.

Friday should see the return of sunshine, forecasters say, before chances for rain return this weekend.
