Judge sets Scott Roeder's bond at $5 million

- Sedgwick County District Judge Warren Wilbert today set a $5 million bond for Scott Roeder, who remains in jail charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller.

Wilbert set the bond after Roeder's public defender, Steve Osburn, filed a motion pointing out that Kansas law prevented defendants accused of non-capital cases from being held without bond.

Roeder's charge could bring life in prison, if he's convicted, but he will not face the death penalty. The Kansas Bill of Rights requires bail except for people charged with capital crimes with strong evidence against them.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Kim Parker didn't dispute a bond needed to be set and requested $10 million.

A hearing had originally been set for Friday morning, but Osburn said Wilbert decided to set bond this afternoon.

Tiller was shot and killed Sunday in the foyer of the Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita. Roeder was arrested three hours later in the Kansas City area and charged with murder on Tuesday.
