Police ticket dozens on Kellogg near Rock

The speed limit on Kellogg near Rock Road in east Wichita is 35 mph — and police this weekend wrote more than three dozen tickets for motorists who forgot that.

The reduced speed is part of the completion of the Kellogg/Rock Road interchange, which is gradually being opened to traffic this month.

Traffic on Kellogg was opened to both directions from the interchange last week, and traffic on Rock Road over Kellogg is opening in stages this week.

But finishing touches are still being made from east of Woodlawn to well past Rock Road on Kellogg and won't be completed until the end of the year, officials have said.

Officers focusing on westbound traffic in the 7700 block of East Kellogg — between Rock and Armour in the heart of the just-opened stretch of freeway — wrote 37 tickets Sunday afternoon.

A 51-year-old man was arrested Sunday afternoon after he nearly ran over a police officer using a radar gun on Kellogg to check the speed of drivers.

He pulled over when flagged down for doing 65 in a 35 but refused to get out, police said. He then drove away and tried to flee officers, finally abandoning his car at Bailey and Oliver.

He was caught a short distance away and arrested.
