Wichita police name new deputy chief

Nelson Mosley, a 22-year veteran of the Wichita Police Department, has been named the city's newest deputy chief, department officials announced Monday.

Mosley, 44, joins Tom Stolz and Terri Moses as deputy chiefs under Chief Norman Williams.

A native of Delaware, Mosley said he always wanted to be a police officer — and that once he achieved that goal, he aspired to become deputy chief someday.

"As deputy chief, you're part of the executive staff that kind of shapes and molds the direction of the department," he said.

Mosley joined the Air Force and spent time at McConnell Air Force Base. When his Air Force commitment ended, he decided to stay in Wichita.

"This community means a lot to me," he said, adding that although he wasn't born here, "this is my home."

Mosley graduated from the law enforcement training academy in 1987 and became a patrol officer. He climbed the ranks to detective, sergeant, lieutenant and captain.

Mosley assumed his new duties as deputy chief overseeing the support services division on Saturday.
