Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin will be the featured speaker at the Salina Chamber of Commerce annual banquet on Feb. 5.

The event, at the Salina Bicentennial Center, is expected to draw people from across the state.

"She is interesting and in high demand," said Salina Chamber president Dennis Lauver. "Whether you love her or disagree with her, we think the response will be great."

Lauver said Palin was clearly identified as a front-runner early in the chamber's speaker selection process. In past years, the banquet has featured Bob Costas, Cal Ripken Jr., Dr. Joyce Brothers, Colin Powell and former President George H. W. Bush.

Lauver would not say how much Palin's speaking engagement cost the chamber. Tickets and sponsors of the dinner are expected to pay for her appearance.

Tickets go on sale to the general public Dec. 2 at $75 per person. For more information call 785-827-9301 or toll-free 877-725-4625 or e-mail scole@salinakansas.org.

Palin was sworn in as Alaska's first female governor on Dec. 4, 2006. In August 2008, Sen. John McCain asked her to be his vice presidential running mate in his bid for president, making her the first woman to run on the Republican Party's presidential ticket.

Palin is the author of "Going Rogue: An American Life," which is scheduled for release Nov. 17.
