Handcuffed suspect takes off in police car

- Northeast Kansas authorities say a suspected car thief is back in custody after allegedly stealing a police cruiser and trying to run down the arresting officer.

Pottawatomie County deputies say a St. Marys police officer had handcuffed the man after stopping him in a suspected stolen car early Thursday. But the suspect somehow managed to maneuver his cuffed hands in front of himself and drove off in the police cruiser.

Deputies say the man tried to run down the officer, who took a shot at the car as it sped off.

Soon the police car was located two miles west of St. Mary's. Within a few hours the suspect was back in custody after a search by officers from several agencies.
