UPDATE (10 a.m. Tuesday): The injured man was identified as Daniel Earl Newburn, 30, of Hutchinson, according to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver who struck Newburn has been identified as Edward Syres of Hutchinson, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.
ORIGINAL STORY: A man was struck by a vehicle while attempting to walk across K-96 early Monday near Haven, according to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a Facebook post on the sheriff’s office page, a man was attempting to cross the highway at the Kent Road intersection, northwest of Haven, when he was hit by a vehicle traveling south on K-96.
The crash happened just after 2 a.m. on Monday, the post said. The victim was airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
The driver of the vehicle, according to sheriff’s deputy Jeremy VanWey, stated that he did not see the pedestrian and swerved at the last moment in an attempt to miss him, but made contact with the front driver side of the vehicle.
North and southbound lanes of K-96 were temporarily shut down immediately after the crash. Neither the driver of the vehicle or his passenger suffered injuries, according to the deputy.
