This Kansan was born in Ottawa in 1936. He attended Yale University, earning degrees in both divinity and law.
He became the national director of the Democratic presidential campaign in 1972 and, two years later, was elected a U.S. Senator from Colorado, serving until 1987.
Twice he ran for President of the United States.
He’s written four novels, using the pen name John Blackthorn.
His 1988 bid for President ended when he was accused of having an extramarital affair. A photo of him was taken with a 29-year-old model sitting on his lap on board a luxury boat nicknamed “Monkey Business.”
