During the 1980s and '90s, this native Kansan was hard to ignore: Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.
Appearing late at night on TV screens across America, she developed a cult-like fan base that fervently followed her punk vampire look.
In truth, Elvira was just another small-town girl from Kansas making it big in Hollywood.
Early on, she met Elvis Presley, who encouraged her to try singing as a career. She did and became the lead singer in the Italian rock band I Latins Ochanats.
Never miss a local story.
In 1981, she became Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. She hosted her own TV show in a campy black dress that revealed much. She ended each show by murmuring "Unpleasant Dreams."
She gained national acclaim by appearing as a guest on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" and numerous other shows, including "Saturday Night Live."
And, in 1992, Elvira appeared with the rock band U2 at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and announced she was running for president, declaring, "We already have two boobs in the White House, might as well be mine."
To her credit, Elvira has had several national firsts, including:
-- Elvira's Movie Macabre was the first nationally syndicated horror host show.
-- She is the first woman to do a national beer campaign.
