The basics: Collegiate was successful against Trinity’s zone the entire game, shooting 57 percent from the field (25 of 44) to win the Class 4A-Division II sub-state title at Clearwater. The Spartans committed 13 turnovers in the first half, but took better care of the ball in a decisive third quarter. Collegiate was also more effective defensively against Trinity’s Alex Bearup after the break. Bearup made four three-pointers and had 14 points at halftime, but only five in the second half.
Key stretch: Collegiate was outstanding in the third quarter, making 11 of 17 shots and scoring 25 points to take a 50-40 lead. Sophomore Kennedy Brandenburg hit a jumper and a three-pointer from the top of the key on Collegiate’s first two possessions of the second half. Loan’Anh Johnson made all four of her field-goal attempts in the third, while Kirby Krumsick was 3 for 3.
Standouts: Johnson matched Bearup with a game-high 19 points for Collegiate. Brandenburg scored 13 of her 15 in the second half and Krumsick added 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
What they said: “We were surprised to only be down two at half,” Collegiate coach Greg Lower said. “I was preaching that to them. We’re a different team than we were earlier in the season. We would have come out nervous in big games, but they didn’t do that tonight in the second half.”
What it means: Collegiate earns its first 4A-II tournament berth, its first state appearance since winning the 3A title in 2011. The Spartans won five of their last seven to improve to 9-13 under Lower. The Spartans also denied top-seeded Trinity its third consecutive state appearance.
