Two women rescued from church basement earlier than thought

It turns out that two elderly women who were rescued from the basement of the local Mennonite church were found early Saturday morning.

It turns out that two elderly women who were rescued from the basement of the local Mennonite church were found early Saturday morning.

Greensburg Mayor Lonnie McCollum mistakenly told a reporter on Monday that they were pulled from the debris on Sunday morning after someone walking by heard them shouting.

Another person who was reportedly found on Sunday night turned out to be a county commissioner who had returned home after the storm.

No one has been found alive in the rubble of Greensburg since early Saturday.

"Every day that goes by, it is less realistic to find someone alive," said Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. "But we will hold out hope."
