Gov. Sam Brownback’s office announced Wednesday that former NASA public relations veteran Eileen Hawley has been hired as his chief spokeswoman.

Hawley will replace Sherriene Jones-Sontag, who is leaving the governor’s office to become deputy director of the state lottery.

Hawley most recently worked as vice president for operations at the Chamber of Commerce in Lawrence, where she lives with her husband Steve, a Kansas native and former space shuttle astronaut.

Before that, she was director of external relations for the Johnson Space Center in Houston, where she oversaw communications, government relations and educational outreach functions.

Hawley holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Houston, Clear Lake and a master’s from Seton Hall University in New Jersey.
