Switchblades will be legal weapons in Kansas if Gov. Sam Brownback signs a bill House lawmakers sent to his desk Thursday.
It passed swiftly on a 95-26 vote, mostly along party lines.
“Shick, schick,” said Rep. Ramon Gonzalez, R-Perry, mimicking the sound of a blade. “You’re done.”
The proposal drew resistance from law enforcement who said the return of the old-school blades could make their line of work more dangerous.
But Rep. Arlen Siegfreid, R-Olathe, said knives won’t have any significant impact on officer safety.
The knives, which pop a blade out with the push of a button, would still be banned from schools and correctional facilities. But cities and counties could no longer ban them.
