Autism-vaccine case to be heard in federal court

WASHINGTON -- Families claiming that a mercury-based preservative in vaccines triggers autism will challenge mainstream medicine today as they take their case to a federal court.

They seek vindication and financial redress from a government fund that helps people injured by shots.

Two 10-year-old boys from Portland, Ore., will serve as test cases that determine whether the children and their families in similar situations should be compensated. Attorneys for the boys will attempt to show the boys were happy, healthy and developing normally. But, after being exposed to vaccines with thimerosal, they began to regress and show symptoms of autism.

United, US Airways merger gets closer

CHICAGO -- United Airlines is closing in on a merger with US Airways, sources say, after being spurned by Continental Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

The combined carrier's headquarters would be in Chicago, United's base and home to its largest airport hub, said a person familiar with the negotiations.

Others caution that the management team's makeup and a host of other issues have yet to be sorted out and that an announcement isn't imminent.

Clinton tours birthplace of Mother's Day

GRAFTON, W.Va. --Hillary Clinton toured the birthplace of Mother's Day in rural West Virginia, offering Democrats a subtle reminder Sunday that her fading candidacy remains strong among women and blue-collar, white voters.

That loyal base is expected to carry Clinton to a sizable victory in the primary on Tuesday, though it won't do much to close the gap between her and Barack Obama. Clinton's lingering candidacy highlights not just her strengths but also how difficult it has been for Obama to make inroads among some Democratic constituencies.
