The BlackTop Nationals car, truck and motorcycle show will be in downtown Wichita next August, its backers announced Monday.

"Is it going to be another Sturgis? Who knows?" said Rick Nuckolls, one of the founders, referring to the annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis, S.D.

"But we expect many thousands of cars and motorcycles will be here."

The event, scheduled for Aug. 26-29, will raise money for local and national charities, Nuckolls said. It will feature more than 35 events, including a collector vehicle auction, cruise nights, autocross and drifting competitions, car and motorcycle builds, and a women's fair.

The event will invite top customizers and restoration experts to compete, organizers say. And, classic cars could cruise Douglas.

"Imagine thousands of people with lawn chairs and their favorite beverages lined up along Douglas while a Duesenberg and who knows what else goes by," Nuckolls said.

"Wichita is a classic car heaven," he said. "We hope this will take off and be back year after year in the downtown."
