Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

The record: A comparison and searchable database of hospitals by Medicare.
Why you’d want it: To learn more about how hospitals are rated by patients and by outcomes such as re-admissions, complications and deaths. You may search for information such as a survey of patients’ experiences, timely and effective care, use of medical imaging, payment and value of care and the number of Medicare patients. You may generate specialized charts by comparing up to three hospitals. National information also is available for comparison.
Where you get it: www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare/search.html
How much does it cost: The database is free.
