Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.

The record: Statistics for criminal cases investigated and cleared in the Wichita Police Department's investigations division

Why you'd want them: To learn more about crimes in Wichita and how many are solved. Cases are broken down by homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and auto theft. For example, last year there were 18 homicides, of which 17 were considered solved.

Where you get the records: From the police department's website, www.wichita.gov/CityOffices/Police. Click on the investigations division link underneath the photograph.

How much it will cost: The information is free.
