This Kansan earned a living by singing, acting and dubbing vocals in Hollywood movies. She sang for Barbara Stanwyck in "Ladies of the Big House" and appeared in the movie "Gold Diggers of 1933" as a war widow.
Through her voice, she changed how white Americans heard and saw black Americans. She became a sough-after actress and contralto vocalist.
She also influenced how black Americans saw themselves, becoming a role model and mentor for man actors and singers of the late 20th century.
